With fewer restrictions in public areas and face masks mostly worn on a voluntary basis, illness is spreading more this winter season. Alberta Health is recommending that people receive an annual flu shot to protect against influenza, the cost of which is covered by the province. For those under 65 years of age, a regular flu shot is available. If you are 65 or older, there is a high dose vaccine that has been shown to be more effective at warding off a flu infection for this age group. You can also visit https://www.albertahealthservices.ca/influenza/influenza.aspx for more information.
In addition, new bivalent COVID vaccines are now available:
- Pfizer bivalent vaccine called Comirnaty – This vaccine targets the original SARS-CoV-2 virus from 2019 and the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, and is authorized for use as a booster dose for people 12 years of age or older.
- Moderna bivalent vaccine called Spikevax – This vaccine targets the original SARS-CoV-2 virus from 2019 and the Omicron BA.1 subvariant, and is authorized for use as a booster dose in adults 18 years of age or older.
As mentioned above each vaccine targets different subvariants. However, there is a large degree of overlap to protect against both variants due to their cross-protection activity. Therefore, one product has not been shown to be superior versus the other, and a person may choose either brand regardless of doses previously received.
